Scotch Doubles

Double the Skill, Double the Thrill

In a BCA (Billiard Congress of America) Scotch Doubles match, two players on a team alternate hitting shots, not turns, at the pool table. The format typically uses standard 8-ball rules, where players cannot communicate with their partners during their inning at the table. After a foul or a scratch on the break, specific rules determine the next action, and the losing team's partner will have to break the next rack.

Alternating Shots

  • Players on a team alternate their shots during an inning, not their turns at the table. This means if Player A shoots, then Player B shoots the next shot, and then Player A takes the next one, and so on.

Communication

  • While a player is shooting during their inning, they are not allowed to communicate with their partner. This includes suggestions, mechanical bridges, or any other form of communication.

  • Players can, however, discuss anything with their partner when it's the opposing team's turn at the table, but this discussion must stop immediately at the end of the inning.

  • Any player on either team can call a foul or request a referee to summon an official.

Fouls and Game Rules

  • General rules of 8-ball apply to Scotch Doubles.

  • If a player pockets the 8-ball on an illegal break, their partner gets the option to decide whether to take the break or have the opponent re-break.

  • If a player scratches or fouls on the break, their partner will break the next rack.

Coaching

  • In tournaments, rules regarding coaching may vary. Some leagues allow one coaching time-out per team per game, while other events strictly prohibit it.

General Conduct

  • It is a foul to shoot out of rotation, meaning players must maintain their alternating order of play.

  • Players should be aware of the game and listen carefully to their opponent, clarifying anything they don't understand.
